Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is an aesthetic procedure that uses thin, sterile needles to create hundreds of tiny injuries to your skin. The process prompts your body’s natural healing powers, creating new collagen and other skin tissues.

Treatments can deliver improvements in several common skin conditions, including:

  • Acne scarring
  • Large pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • General texture irregularities
  • Uneven skin tone

One of the biggest draws of microneedling is the chance to achieve improvements in several areas with the same treatment.

How does microneedling work?

Once you and your provider decide that microneedling is a good fit for your specific needs, a numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable during your session. You’ll sit in a slightly reclined position during treatment, which usually lasts around 30 minutes.

Your provider uses a medical tool to deliver multiple small skin pricks at once. The tool is guided across your face in a careful pattern to ensure even results.

After all treatment areas have been covered, a calming serum is applied to soothe your skin.

What kind of recovery is needed after microneedling?

There’s no extensive downtime necessary after microneedling. You may experience some areas of redness for a few days as your body heals. It’s important to use a high-quality sunscreen to protect your skin during this time.

Many men and women return to work or resume their normal activities after their microneedling sessions. You can even apply makeup after your appointment to cover any lingering redness.

What other therapies can complement microneedling?

Because microneedling creates so many tiny channels into the deeper layers of your skin, treatments are a great opportunity to deliver therapeutic products to the areas where they can do the most good.

Platelet-rich plasma is a great example. PRP is a solution made from a small amount of your own blood. A centrifuge spins the blood until a highly concentrated solution of plasma and platelets remains. That solution contains growth factors that promote blood clotting and proteins that promote cellular growth. PRP is applied to your face immediately after microneedling to achieve the best possible absorption.

Hyaluronic acid is another therapeutic solution that can be applied after microneedling. Your skin naturally contains hyaluronic acid, which works to make your skin plumper and more full. The levels decrease over time, and combining hyaluronic acid with microneedling can restore a more youthful appearance.
